Intellectual Property Program

Law students may participate in our Patent or Trademark clinic. In some cases, a student may attend the two clinics sequentially, taking either the Patent or Trademark Clinic one year and the other clinic the following year. IP Program classes generally take place on Saturdays, and run from the end of August to the end of March.

Prerequisites

To participate in the Trademark Clinic, law students must have completed at least one year of law school.

To participate in the Patent Clinic, law students must have completed at least one year of law school and be eligible to sit for the California Patent Bar Exam (below).

The IP Clinic generally runs on Saturdays, and runs from the end of August to the end of March.

Patent Bar Requirements

Patent Bar Requirements
To participate in the Patent Clinic, students must ensure that their technical background qualifies them to take the Patent Bar. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has stated that, to qualify to sit for the Patent Bar, applicants must have earned one of the undergraduate degrees listed here:

Exceptions
Students who have earned degrees that do not appear in the list referenced above may still qualify to sit for the Patent Bar. The USPTO has created an alternate set of qualifying conditions. Citizenship & Residency
IP Program students must ensure that they comply with all current United States visa and/or citizenship requirements.
